The Department of Psychology has been offering the courses in Psychology under the Bachelor Of Arts Programme from the inception of the college in the year 1946. The courses at the TYBA level began to be offered as a double major with a combination with the other subjects including English, Hindi, Marathi, History and Philosophy from the year 2001 onwards. The department experienced a growth in leaps and bounds from the year 2020 after the college was awarded the Autonomous status. The department has started offering a major in Psychology/6 papers, MA in Clinical Psychology and several Certificate courses. A counselling centre manned by the staff of the department and the alumni offers services to the students and staff alike. The key attractions of the department are the state of art Laboratory, well equipped classrooms and a large and comprehensive collection of books and journals in the library that cover a wide range of topics in the discipline apart from the experienced and expert faculty members who make learning an enriching experience for the students.

Objectives

  • To create a strong intellectual foundation in psychological science.
  • To equip the learner with the understanding and application of basic research methods andexperimental design principles.
  • To encourage the learner to respect and use critical and creative thinking, sceptical inquiry, and, the scientific approach to evaluate problems related to behavior and mental processes.
  • To facilitate the learner to observe a scientific temper, value empirical evidences, and reflect life values that are foundation of psychology as a science.
  • To inculcate the value of acting ethically and demonstrating an understanding and applying psychological principles to individual, social, and organizational issues.
  • To ensure an overall ,holistic personality development of the learner.

Disciplinary Knowledge & Cognitive skills: Capable of demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of one or more other disciplines that form a part of an undergraduate programme of study. Students choosing combination of three subjects develop social, political, historic, economic and literary consciousness and will be better able to appreciate different civilizations, culture At the end of the programme, they usually will have advanced reading, writing, speaking, interpretive and composition skills in both languages.
