Department of Hindi

Overview

...

Hindi is one of the top four languages spoken globally. It is obvious, then, that an academic institute that’s deeply rooted in the Indian values must have Hindi as a core subject and language for its pupils.

The Hindi Department at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Mumbai was established in the 60s with the intention of flourishing the language. Dr. Sudesh Behl, the department's HOD then, led it from 1964 to 1996 before retiring. The Hindi Sangh (Hindi association) was founded under her leadership in the 70s.

Since 1996, the department has been led by Dr. Mrs. Rekha Sharma (Associate Professor, Vice-Principal). Dr. Mrs. Medini Anjanikar (Assistant Professor), who has been with the institute since 1999 and is a qualified PhD Guide, is strongly alongside her in the department’s endeavour to promote the language and its literature.

Learners ranging from junior college to undergraduates are taught the subject. The curriculum traces the language's history through several eras, such as Aadikaal (Early Age), Bhaktikaal (Devotional, Medieval Era), Adhunikkaal (Modern Era), and so on.

    Departmental Associations

Every year on Hindi Diwas (September 14), we host a variety of events. The association's goal is to preserve the culture and reflect its evolution over time through literary events such as debates, elocution, essay writing, newsreading, poetry writing and recitation, story writing and recitation, poster-making competition, and cultural programmes that celebrate the various festivals of the country and its diversity.

Renowned custodians of the language have been part of various programmes conducted by the department. To name a few, Late Mr. Shail Chaturvedi (Hindi poet, satirist, humorist, lyricist and actor), renowned musician Mohammed Zahur Khayyam (popularly known as Khayyam sahab), author Suryabalaji, actor Mukesh Khanna among several others.

We also conduct various educational tours like a visit to the NFDC Film Museum, going for plays and visiting libraries across the city.
