The Department of Philosophy is one the oldest departments of Bhavan's College. Our alumni have excelled in academic fields as well as other professions. The subject of Philosophy is interdisciplinary in nature. It is important for the development of analytic thinking and logical reasoning which can be applied in areas such as media, gender, ecology, law, science, technology, corporate management, policy decisions etc. All these areas need sound philosophical foundations. The Department encourages students to ask questions and think critically. It guides them to apply these skills in the required areas. The Department offers a variety of courses including moral, social and political philosophy, Logic, Indian and western philosophy, Philosophy of Religion and Living Ethical Issues. It has its students’ association called Philosophers’ Club. The Department has a vision to introduce interesting multidisciplinary courses in the coming academic years.

Departmental Associations

The Philosophers’ Club

The Department of Philosophy has a students association called The Philosophers’ Club. Any student, faculty or non-teaching staff interested can become a member of this association. The association organises various programs throughout the year including its intercollegiate festival. The programs are open to all the members of Bhavan’s College. The association aims to produce its own creative projects and promote critical inquiry, logical thinking and create an environment of rational thought, inclusiveness and strong value system.

    She is BA in Philosophy and English Literature and also has a degree in BA in Filmmaking Specialised in producing. She is currently working as a Production Assistant at Maddock Films.

  • Mr. Spandan Dhabre

    Our student from TYBA 2021-22 batch Mr. Spandan Dhabre secured admission in MA-PhD Philosophy integrated course in IIT- BOMBAY, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

    Ms.Dhvani Arora

    Ms Dhvani started learning music from her father at the age of 5 and started performing. She has been pursuing it professionally since the past few years and has travelled all over India for national and international events. There are many songs recorded in her voice of which Shiva Rudrashrakam and Mahishasura Mardini Stotram are most loved tracks.

  • Disciplinary Knowledge and Cognitive skills: Capable of demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of one or more other disciplines that form a part of an undergraduate programme of study. Students choosing a combination of three subjects develop social, political, historic, economic and literary consciousness and will be better able to appreciate different civilizations, culture At the end of the programme, they usually will have advanced reading, writing, speaking, interpretive and composition skills in both languages. Communication Skills: Ability to express thoughts and ideas effectively in writing and orally; communicate with others using appropriate media; confidently share one’s views and express herself/ himself; demonstrate the ability to listen carefully; and present complex information in a clear and concise manner to different groups.
  • Effective Citizenship: Demonstrate empathetic social concern and equity centred national development, and the ability to act with an informed awareness of issues and participate in civic life through volunteering. Values and Ethical Awareness: Ability to embrace moral/ ethical values in conducting one’s life, possess knowledge of the values and beliefs of multiple cultures and a global perspective; and capability to effectively engage in a multicultural society and interact respectfully with diverse groups.
  • Employability: On graduating, the students will be eligible for employment in tourism, media, hospitality, and other industries. Students also become employable in non- governmental organisations.. They will also be able to appear for competitive examinations conducted for public sector jobs.
  • Self-directed and Life-long Learning: Acquire the ability to engage in independent and life- long learning in the broadest context of socio- technological changes.
