Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension (DLLE)

Overview

The Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension (DLLE) was established on October 12, 1978 and has been recognized as a Statutory Department and one of the authorities of the University of Mumbai since 1994 to promote a meaningful and sustained rapport between the Universities and the community. It is functioning under the Board for Lifelong Learning and Extension to create skilled and learned human power through its various degree level programmes and skills development programmes. The DLLE with the diverse academic and technical resources supports the communities based extension work activities in collaboration with its specific mandate to work for the less privileged sections of the society and our efforts are to extend educational programs that will enhance and improve the quality of life of such groups with the central objective of“reach tounreached”. At present our DLLE extension activities are being conducted on regular basis in annual program of 235 colleges with 500 degree college Extension Work teachers and 23,516 Extension Work Studentsfrom Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

The Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension was established in the college from the academic year 2020-2021 with a total strength 102 students. It was established with the aim of serving the marginalized and needy sections of the society and shaping the personality of students holistically.

Aim of the Extension Activity

The Third Dimension of Extension is aimed at promoting a meaningful and sustained rapport between the Universities and the Community i.e., to have educational programs for a Social Change.

Objectives of the Extension Activity

    The objectives of Lifelong Learning and Extension are outlined below for making education relevant to real life situations:

  • To act as a focal agency in the University system for all Lifelong Learning programmes and to provide academic and technical resource support for community based activities incollaborationwith Universities departments and colleges.
  • To serve as an intellectual intervention in the communitys living problems which need to be overcome through an educational process.
  • To develop among students a sense of responsibility towards society.
  • To design programs that will help students to face life and its challenges and thus create an ambience for a learning society.
  • To deepen the teachers and students knowledge through a wider exposure to real life situations through a variety of programs.
  • To prepare students for a greater social commitment.
  • To enhance student employability skills
  • To cater to the needs of the unreached for promoting knowledge based society.
  • To network with Governmental and Non-governmental agencies, international organizations as well as industries.

Enrollment Criteria for Students and Teachers

It be noted that the nature and activities to be carried out including the administrative and financial aspects arevery different from N.S.S. and N.C.C. Therefore, the students or teachers who are already participating in N.S.S., N.C.C. or Cultural Activities / Competitions in this specific academic year, are not eligible to register under Extension Work Project. The college will have to deploy a separate teacher for Extension Work Project to be taken up at the college level. The college can enroll as many students as they can.

Benefit to the Participating Students

The students participating in the Extension Work under this Department are entitled to the benefitofTen Grace Marks under the Ordinance 229-Aon the satisfactory completion of 120 hours of work under various Extension WorkProjects. They will also be issued a certificate of participation by the DLLE, University of Mumbai which is useful for students in their career globally.

Extension Work Projects

The Department is offering six types of Extension Work Projects out of which a student can take up any one project for entitlement of the benefit of Ten Grace Marks under the Ordinance 229-A. A range of Extension Work Projects are offered for enhancing the employability and IT skills of the student. The titles of projects are given below:

I. Vocational Career Oriented Projects

  1. Career Project [CP]
  2. Industry Orientation Project [IOP]
  3. Anna PoornaYojana [APY]

II. Community Oriented Projects

  1. Population Education Club (PEC)
  2. Survey of Women’s Status (SWS)
  3. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

*The Student can enroll for any one of the project in offline mode (Regular) only andcollege can choose two to three projects for group of Students.

First / Second Term Training Programme and UDAN Festival

It is compulsory for the college unit to conduct First Term in first semester and Second Term Training Programme in second semester for all the participating students at the college to explain the operational modalities for Extension Work Projects selected. The college unit must participate in Annual Extension Work Festival UDAAN: the flight of Extension to present a skit on any theme related to the projects selected. It is organized every year in at different colleges.

Responsibilities of Extension Work

The Extension Work student should complete 120 hours of work except for Industry Orientation Project where the minimum requirement is 240 hours, for the benefit of 10 Grace Marks underOrdinance 229- A.

The college students are enrolled for extension work projects and perform various activities for the social awareness based on various issues / problems in the society such asSave Girl Child, Pollution, Aids, Global Warming, Environment, Tree Plantation,Importance of Education, Illiteracy, Child Labour, Dowry Deaths, Malnutrition,Watershed Management and so many. The students are creating awareness about these social problems / issues through various activities such as Street Play, Exhibition, Poster Making, Songs, Speech, Survey, Elocution, Seminar and Conferences.

One Extension Work Student Manager for every 24 students is to be deputed to assist the Extension Work Teacher in implementation of the Projects in the College. It is suggested that special care be taken in the selection of Student Managers as they play a major leadership role.A Student Manager has to complete following requirements for the benefit of 10 Grace Marks:-

  1. Attend First Term / Second Term Training Programs both at the Department and college level.
  2. Attend Extension Work Festival at the University with active participation.
  3. Writing and preparation of the Project Report.
  4. Assist the Teacher to prepare the documents to be submitted by the college to the Department
  5. Supervision of the work done by the students under the guidance of the Teachers. The Extension Work Student Manager is expected to be with his team of 24 students at all times whenever they are carrying out the work both at the college and the community levels.

The College should deploy oneExtension Work Teacher (who will not be in N.S.S. Program Officer / N.C.C. Officer / Cultural Coordinator) for Maximum 50 Students. This Extension Work Teacher will:-

  1. Attend First Term and Second Term Training Programs conducted by the Department.
  2. Organize First Term and Second Term Training Programs at college level.
  3. Arrange First Term and Second Term field Visits of the Extension Work Field Coordinator.
  4. Supervise the work done by the students with the help of Extension Work Student Manager.
  5. Prepare documents to be submitted by the College to the Department.
  6. Assess the Project Reports at the College level.

An Extension Work Teacher is also expected:-

  1. To be present throughout the College and the Community level Programs.
  2. To carry out Field Visits at least once in a month in the Community.
  3. To be present during the Field Visits by the Extension Work Field Coordinator.
  4. To ensure that every single student is present during the Field Visits by the Field Coordinator.

Financial Aspects of Extension Work Projectsat the College Level

Participation Charge for Students: A participation Charge of Rs. 200/- (Rupees two hundred only)as approved by the Management Council is to be collected from each student at the time of Registration. Out of this an amount of Rs. 100/- is to be retained by the college for the college level expenditure including traveling and incidental expenses of Extension Work Teacher / Student Manager required to attend meeting, programs etc. at the University or Programs of the Department. The balance of Rs. 100/- of each student is to be sent to the Department along with the list of students registered for the Extension Work by a single

The Demand Draft of the total amount drawn in favor of The Finance and Accounts Officer, University of Mumbai. This participation Charge alone that ensures funding for the Extension Programme at the college level and the University level. It is therefore advisable that a college registers as many students as possible for the programme, subject to a maximum of 50 students per teacher in these projects. For every additional 50 students, a college may assign additional teacher.
